Then it would be best to remember where the land fills are and to mine
them when (and not before) it makes sense.
The metals in trash aren't going anywhere, best to let them wait for
their value to increase in a nice safe landfill.
OK, so let me see: you're not willing to spend a certain amount today to
sort 10 pound of useful metals from, say, a ton of circuit boards, yet you
have no problem asking your grand-grandkids to spend 1000 times that
amount, to extract the same 10lbs from 1000 tons of mixed waste in the
landfill they're supposed to mine in the future. Hey, I just realized
that the "economic value" you were talking about only makes sense to you
when _you_ are reaping the benefits.
When the people of the future need the resources of the landfill, the value
of the materials there will be increased - balancing the equation.
Money in the present is worth MUCH more than money in the future.
The kids reap the benefits because the money needed to build the economy
that will employ and feed them was invested positively and was not wasted by
their parents to feel good about being green.
