wow,

PASS THROUGH? i almost PASSED OUT while reading those instructions!

i do, however, have a friend who's a techno guy so i am printing this and
will hand it off to him when he comes over for a few and to mess with this
cable box. his customary fee for all techno work is a six pack. good man,
he is, good man.

and thank you,

mike

Assuming you have the Scientific Atlanta box. The setup info is not part of
the MENU. You need to turn the TV ON, and cable box OFF. Now hold down the
GUIDE and INFO buttons on the front of the cable box to get at setup. If you
don't have the instructions, download the manual from the SA web site. You
will have to register to get at the downloads section. Again, don't enable
480i, many sets will only work 480i through the antenna/composite/ SVideo
inputs.

Set the Cable Box to PASS THROUGH mode. Enable 480P, 720P and 1080i in
the Cable Box setup (480i will be converted to 480P). Now the view mode
on the TV will work as before if you leave the CableBox mode to norman.
On my set (Sharp), this works best with Component Video connections. HDMI
will casuse the Sharp to change view modes when swithing from 480 to
720/1080; you TV may not do that.

hello,

just switched from Dish Network to BrightHouse (formerly Time Warner)
and am a little disappointed.

the equipment:

Philips 30 HDTV model - 30PW8502/37 - a 30" wide screen.

Cable box - Pace

i have googled around for a solution to the one and only major problem
we're having but can't seem to find the solution for it. maybe there is
no answer.

anyway, there are very few HD channels to select from. they are
beautiful to watch too. but were having the problem with the other
digital and analog stations there is no "good" screen format. the best
is a bad compromise that results in some rather large black bars on the
sides of the screen, sometimes at the top and bottom also.

for the non-HD channels the BrightHouse remote has a switch with 3
screen settings: zoom, wide and normal, none of which is very good for
the non HD channels.

"wide"setting results in the some ugly stretched images - people look
like the have been flattened by a steam roller.

"zoom" has well focused, non-distorted images better but it cuts the
tops of people's heads off. i find myself staring at a lot of eyebrows
these days.

and "normal" brings up the bars.

the Philips remote has a format button that goes from 4:3 to 14:9 to
16:9 to wide to superwide to subtitle zoom. when we had the analog Dish
i could always count on of these format settings to get the right size
picture no matter what was on.

but the BrightHouse HD box somehow "overrides" the Philips remote so the
function doesn't even show up on the menu! i experimented and switched
the wiring from the box from AV4 to AV1 to AV2 and CVI. the format
function appears on the on-screen menus on the AVs as long as the
particular AV is NOT connected to the cable box. why is this?

any remedies known for this problem? i also fear that enough hours with
the black bars will damage the picture somehow. the television is less
than 2 years old and performs like a champ but for this screen ratio
problem.

i called BrightHouse and they said, "oh, that's normal." in essence
they said sorry, but you're just going to have to live with it.

true? "geez," as my father used to say, "we can put a man on the moon
but (fill in the blank)... ."

come to think of it, i don't have to live with it as long as the
geosynch satellites are up there and the dish companies stay in
business.

is there a solution to this format thing?

i appreciate you taking the time to read this thing. hope i provided
enough info to make this understandable.

thanks,

mike
