I think I just found what you are talking about. I just looked up the
owners manual ( the exact model # is KDFE42A10) If you go into the Wega
menu under screen settings, there is a 4:3 default submenu that says at
the top "automatic sizing for 4:3 pictures". Then you have a choice of
zoom, wide zoom, full or normal. Maybe this is what I was suppose to do?

That's it. The TV will recognize when it is receiving 4:3 and remember your
display choice.

Update:OK, I spent about 1/2 hour in front of my in-laws TV last night.
I did try the auto sizing settings on the Sony TV and it did not work.
I set up the SA4200HD as follows:

RF out: To the VCR, then fed out to the TV
Component out (L/R/Video): video 1 of TV
RGB (HDTV) video 4 of TV.

If I watch an SD channel on Cable in ( ch 3) or video 1, I get a full
picture in the screen based on my settings for the 4:3 auto sizing. But
when I switch to video 4 (RGB HDTV input) I get bars on the sides. It
seems like the auto sizing feature on the TV does not work for this
input, since maybe the TV knows anything plugged into this input is
16:9 HDTV.Maybe the Auto sizing feature works for OTA signals (?)
Also what I noticed is the stretch feature on the SA4200HD degrades the
picture a lot. When I use the "wide zoom" feature on the TV it seems a
lot better. So for now, the TV is set to Video 1 for the SD channels ,
and when I want to watch HD channels I have to set it to video 4.
Also I talked to someone yesterday who installs home theater systems.
He claims that up until 2 years ago, Cablevision boxes were able to do
this autosizing, but now they can't. Also he says that the TWC boxes in
NYC can do this auto sizing, and he can't understand why Cablevision
can't now since they use the same box ( Again, this is what he told me,
so I do not know if this is true or not).
