Which is why the US has far more digital HDTV broadcast today than any
other country in the world.

Remember, whatever Bob Miller says, the exact opposite is true!

I thought Japan was. They have had HDTV longer than the US. Most of their
TV shows are in HD or wide-screen format.

I don't know if it makes a difference, but Hong Kong uses PAL at 50Hz.

Japan does have HDTV, lots of it, and they have had HD for years.

And in Japan, unlike the US, the public is actually buying OTA HDTV
sets. That is they are making a free decision to buy a TV set with an
OTA HD tuner built in.

http://www.dibeg.org/news/news-5/news-e5.htm#dn065e

They have bought 11 million OTA HDTV receivers of which 7 million are
integrated HDTV sets.

In the US the public is being made to buy those receivers by mandate.
Most don't even know, care or even try to use these OTA tuners. Wasted
money on junk receivers with a garbage modulation.

....
Not sure it's wise to correct Bob Miller, one may just as well talk
to a brick wall... but there is no mandate for HD television purchase
in the US. There is no mandate to purchase a digital receiver either.

A cable box or satellite receiver will continue to provide compatible
signals to the viewing box for many years.

OTA broadcasters must deliver digital signals but there is no
requirement to provide High Definition programming.
