Re: Chinese choose both VSB and OFDM

Psycho Bob's advocacy of MPEG4 over MPEG2 is also interesting for another
reason. From the point of view of HDTV, the big benefit of MPEG4 over
MPEG2 is that you can squeeze a lot more into the same bandwidth.

He keeps claiming this, but I really, really find it hard to believe
that a realtime MPEG-4 compressor can do better than the 10-11Mbps that
Fox uses for their scripted shows (1280x720/60p). Multi-pass compression
of HD material using MPEG-4 that takes many times longer than realtime
results in a bitrate around 8-10Mbps.

It is
highly instructive to compare an over-the-air MPEG2 broadcast with the
identical broadcast in MPEG4 over DirecTV's new satellite.

Except for the very few that absolutely can't get their digital locals via
antenna, there is no reason to bother with MPEG-4 HD locals...DirecTV has
literally unlimited bandwidth and yet their MPEG-4 re-compression *still*
looks crappy. What will it be like when they hit a bit of a bandwidth
crunch because of more DMAs going online and more channels per DMA being
carried?
