I finally got around to changing the cable box on my in-laws HDTV to
an SA4200HD. As the manual on the cable box says, I use the stretch
and zoom feature on the cable box, not the TV, which is fine.
Problem is my elderly in-laws are not really that technically
inclined, so I just left the setting full time on "stretch", so they
can watch SD channels with no bars as well as the HD channels,
although the HD channels would be zoomed in, but I doubt they would
even notice the difference. They have a Sony Wega 42" (?) LCD
For my own curiosity, since I myself do not own an HDTV yet but
someday might, do they make an HDTV that can auto detect whether to
stretch the picture or not? I'm new to this HDTV stuff so I'm just
trying to educate myself.

Why leave it on stretch? Why not just leave the SD channels to normal
and not distort the picture? If they have a LCD RPTV, burn-in is not a
concern. If you leave the HD channels on zoom to get rid of the
pillarbars on 4:3 upconverted material, then much of the picture is
cropped out. Just leave both the STB and TV on normal - or whatever
Sony and SA call it in the manual - so there is no distortion or
cropping. You should try to make them understand these settings in
case they hit the button on the remote so they can get it back to the
right setting.

Some folks like to stretch the picture to fit the screen. Some don't. You
don't but some do. I like the panoramic stretch for SD. You would not. Just
the way it is.
