Re: best mode to display 480i programming over DVI/HDMI?

Unbelievably, I cleared up the problem with the use of the *sharpness* control!!

The observed problem was that the DirecTV program guide showed up blurred when the monitor was in 480p mode. This is an LCD monitor, which supports 480p/720p/1080i on DVI.

Looking at the problem more carefully, it was if alternative frames were offset from each other. As an experiment, I tried the sharpness control. Must to my surprise, rather than adding distortion (which is what it does on a CRT), it adjusted the alignment of the frames!

On DVI input, the sharpness control seemed to have no effect for 720p or 1080i input. For 480p input, proper alignment was achieved with the sharpness at 100 (all the way up).

I then decided to look at the other inputs.

For composite input at 480i (laser disk), the best sharpness setting was at 50. Below 50 and the frames were misaligned; above 50 and the familiar picture noise that I associate with sharpness on CRTs shows up.

For S-video input at 480i (DVD), the best sharpness setting was at 37, with the same behaviors at other settings as composite. The sharpness setting in S-video mode increments by 6 instead of 1.

For component input at 480p (DVD), the best sharpness setting was at 0. Above 0, and the familiar CRT picture noise shows up. The sharpness setting in component mode increments by 10 instead of 1.

There's no sharpness setting for analog RGB.

So, apparently "sharpness" means something different on this LCD monitor than it does on CRTs. I've always been accustomed to "sharpness is bad, set it to 0 first thing".

Do other LCD monitors behave this way?
