It's not the CRT that was an issue, but rather the high voltage
rectifier.
Even then the CRT problem was only a problem if the tube was getting
week and the high voltage had been jacked up. Then you had to set
your feet under the set.

Wasn't it actually the shunt regulator for the EHT? 6BK4 come to mind.
Those were gone by the time rectangular color tubes showed up around
1967 -- which was why I mentioned 21" round CRTs. The internal
construction of the shunt regulator tube resembles a mini,
comparatively low voltage X-ray tube.
