Hello Everyone,

I am almost finished adding on a new living room and thinking about
getting a new television.

I have been looking at some wide screen Plazma or LCD televisions. Most
of our TV watching would still be in a regular TV format and I was
wondering what size wide screen I would have to get that would give me
the equivilant of watching aabout a 30 inch regular TV when watching
that format.

Also, are there any real advantages to getting a Plazma over an LCD TV
other than the refresh rate problem with some LCD TV's.

Yes. The better brand name plasmas will have better black levels,
superior color gamut, better viewing angles, better looking picture

Maybe but I doubt it. The latest LCDs can be viewed from virtually any
useable angle and black is basically black. They are also very bright.
The color gamut is every bit as good as the 19" CRTs I was using with
photo editing.

The latest plasmas do have a higher contrast range on the order of
10,000:1 with the LCDs being around 5,000 or so which is better than
earlier plasmas.

(IMO) and are less expensive for same size screens. Cons to the plasmas

The plasmas are considerably cheaper in the larger screen sizes
compared to LCDs. Under 37 inches I don't see a lot of difference.
As I recall the 42" Samsung Plasma is about $600 less than their 40"
LCD.

are: 1) more reflective screens which can be a problem in brightly lit
rooms or rooms with lots of windows during the day, 2) lower resolution
which is a drawback for computer use, and 3) burn-in concerns if using
the TV very heavily for gaming,

With the exception of the reflections (glass is after all shiny) the
new models have done a pretty good job of handeling burn in and they
now come in very high resolutions. (1080p and 1080i)

I'm not so sure how well one would handle the standard format most of
the time with wide screen only used occasionally even if they are much
better on burn in than the earlier ones.
