For satellite receiver technology that becomes obsolete in 5 years
or less, the lease deal is better than a purchase.

It would have been when receivers were $600, but if there is *any*
upfront cost to the current DirecTV "lease", it's too much and makes it
a very bad deal.

On the other hand, when plain old receivers were free after rebates with
the same commitment required by the lease and you could conceivably sell
them after you were through with them, I don't see how the lease is a
better deal for the customer. If all repairs, replacements, and upgrades
on the lease deal were free, then it has at least something, but there
is no indication from DirecTV that this is true.

Maybe I'm missing something here. If you look at the cost of the equipment
on Best Buy or direct from Directv, the boxes still have their standard cost
(for example, the HR10-250 is $499). It mentions the lease as $4.99/month.
Is this in addition to the standard per receiver fee, or is it actually the
same thing as what we've already been paying for with additional receivers?

If it is an additional fee, then what is the $499 for? I don't understand
what they are calling a lease if you are paying $499 up front for the box.
Here are the terms based on Best Buy's web page. It almost looks like it is
just a requirement for 12 or 24 months of service. Any thoughts?
