Went to pick up a new direct tv receiver at best Buy for HD . they said I
had to lease it. This is a joke right?

No. I'm not a Direct TV subscriber, but from what I've heard they went to a
lease-only arrangement earlier this year.

For satellite receiver technology that becomes obsolete in 5 years
or less, the lease deal is better than a purchase. I have two working
DirecTV receivers stored in the garage, that served me well for less
than 3 years each. Had these been leased, I would have been provided
with newer units when local channel assignments were changed
from 8xx to 2 digit channel numbers.

HD capable satellite receivers are going to be feature updated
several times in the next 5 years.
