My Sharp DLP: Good News, Bad News , X3

Just under six months ago, I purchased a Sharp 56DR650 DLP RPTV.
Good News: I felt like I got a really good deal. The original MSRP
was around $2500 IIRC. The Navy Exchange here in Corpus Christi had
it on sale for $2199 plus they gave me 10% off for it being the first
purchase on my credit account (limited to $200), and they gave me
another 5% because it had been on display for a week and they couldn't
find the box. So the TV plus a three year extended warranty was just
under $2k.
My wife and I love the picture on this set. We watch mainly sports,
nature, and travel shows so there is plenty of content on our local
cable system. The SD network pictures can be a little grainy but the
digital pictures (non-HD) look fine.
Bad News: It will be two weeks Saturday since we first heard "the
noise." It was faint at first but it got louder. It became pretty
obvious the cooling fan for the lamp was the culprit.
Good News: We called Sharp and they put us on to an ASC in our area.
The guy came out the next day, confirmed it was the fan,.
Bad News: The guy doesn't stock the fans and tells us it will be
seven to ten days before he gets it. So we wait. The fan isn't
getting any noisier but it's pretty annoying. Today I called because
we had reached the ten day mark. I am told that the part is on
backorder until mid May! :-(
Good News: I called Sharp and asked WTF??!! They were great. I was
switched to another department and the lady I talked to took the
information and said she would look into it and call me back. Within
a half hour she returned the call and told me that my servicer was
ordering his part through a distributor. They didn't know what the
distributor's problem was but they said on Monday a fan would be sent
overnight directly to my servicer. Hopefully he'll get out here right
away because......
Bad News: This afternoon the set refused to turn on. I'm guessing
that the fan died altogether and that there is some protection
circuitry that is keeping it from coming on. So I just finished
"listening" to my recording of PTI and Sports Center through the AV
system. Luckily I've operated the DVR so much that I can manage to
operate it without the benefit of a video display.
My wife has been asking for an HD set for the bedroom. That just
moved up on the priority list. I'll probably throw some plastic at
one tomorrow. It probably won't be another Sharp.
