Re: HD-DVD recorders-when?

Broadcast flagged HD content is still an unknown too, but all HD recorders
will be chipped to prevent recording if the content is flagged.

The point is that you would be foolish to buy one of these recorders now,
before you know what, if anything, you can do with it.

You're missing the point. All HD movies and other HD content has DRM
encoded
into it that will not allow any burning or recording in HD compliant
hardware. The exception is "managed copy", where the owner of the HD
content
gives permission for one copy to be made. this requires "activation"
type
internet connection.

We can hope that the DRM protections will be cracked, but they don't
exist
yet so it's an unknown.

Bottom line, you do not own HD content, you borrow it for whatever
purposes
the owner allows.

I am pretty sure that over the air broadcast HD does not (yet?) use DRM. I
might also like the extra strorage space to store lots of SD content,
backup
lots of computer data, store HD movies I create myself. Piracy is not the
only use of a recorder.
