The Sony Blu-ray player can be preordered right now from Best Buy,
Crutchfield, and a number of other websites. It is $1,000 everywhere, which
is a good bit more than the Toshiba players. Since I have NOT seen the Sony
player yet I can't comment on it but I did see the Toshiba player and was
truly underwhelmed by the experience. What a lousy presentation of what
should have floored me as a product.

Panasonic, Samsung, Pioneer, and Sony all have players slated for release in
the next few months. May 23 is the current release date for the first
Blu-Ray player (Samsung) which coincides with the first movies being
released on Blu-Ray.

Interestingly - Those pointing at delays with Blu-ray really should know
that HD-DVD promised to be in stores prior to LAST Christmas and it wasn't
until October or so that they changed their mind. Blu-Ray has been slated
as a 2006 product since early 2005. Yes, the exact date may slide a little
bit... but I'm not really interested in buying right away. I want to see
what the VARIOUS manufacturers put out there and how they compare to each
other.

Everything else about the technology, what it will, or won't do, is pure
speculation and should be taken with a grain of salt until you read an
actual review of an actual consumer product.

Even the HD-DVD I saw, while it was a real HD-DVD - I don't believe was
indicitive of the quality of the final product.

Note: While I am a fan of Blu-ray and a fan of PS3... I happily tell
others that the X-Box 360 is an awesome product that looks great - and it
tempts me everytime I see it. The Toshiba HD-DVD looked MUCH worse than HD
from my cable box, which is ludicrous considering that it should have been
about twice the HD bandwidth that my cable company is providing me. Very
poor image quality for their kickoff tour. :o(

When I was last reading this group, maybe a year ago, HDDVD and Bluray
titles were supposed to be near at hand... what happened?

(Still baffled on how to get the firmware upgrade for my Samsung
TX2670WH...)
