Somewhat old 43fdx that has already been "fixed" once with the IC
problem, has blown again. The first time it was the blue, this time it
appears to be the red. Powered set off, now when I power the set on I
get a popping/cracking sound. Sometimes a pic, other times not. Not sure
I want to reinvest in getting the set fixed again (not as handy as some
here) and wonder if it is symptomatic of other problems as well. Also its
hard to find anyone who actually fixes this anymore. Thoughts?
BTW I keep reading about this failure, is it limited to the Hitachi set?
Of the manufacturers of CRT RPTVs, Hitachi is one of the better brands.
If you post the entire model number and post the exact repair done
previously, perhaps we can give you some specific information.
My guess is that you had a convergence IC replaced. Depending on the set
(which would be identified by the final digits of the model number, there
may be an upgrade for that output IC that may be more durable. There are
several caveats to servicing convergence output stages, so post what was
done and what parts were used.
The current symptom does not sound like a convergence amp failure. Get
the set checked by a tech who is experienced with Hitachi RPTV and who is
set up with Hitachi to access their web site.

The set is a 43FDX01B. We had the repair done about 2 years ago. If I
recall correctly they said they had to replace the ICs and the Amps (does
that sound correct) and that they had to resolder some cracked joints. My
problem is in the area of CT where I live I can't find a service technician
who will come to the house to look at the set. There is one company that
will come out and take the set the away. This was the last company who did
the previous work, who when the did finish the work returned the set only to
have the IC go out again. They came and got the TV "fixed" it only to
return without doing a convergence on all the inputs. So when I went to an
HD source it was out of wack. I ended up spending ~350 dollars with pick up
and fixes to get it running, only to spend another ~300 to have it
calibrated by an ISF tech.
The screen looks exactly like it did the last two times it failed. The
crackling/popping sound is new. Poking around the other sites it appears
that there are a number of others who have had the IC issue with the Hitachi
set. Last time it broke my wife in frustration over the length of the
repair (about 2 months) went out and bought a brand new TV. Since the
Hitachi is in the basement I don't if its worth the investment to get it
fixed again. Where prices are today on comparable (or better sets) it seems
that maybe I should just dump the box.
