What type of hdtv shows standard definition best ?

I'm buying a wide screen TV for my wife.
Almost all the programs/channels she watches are SD.
Was considering a well known rear projection unit, but
a post said it was almost unusable for standard definition.
What type of HDTV displays SD best ?
With plasma I'm concerned about burn-in , as she leaves the
TV on all day, esp. on shopping channels with bright boxes
on the screen.
She wants a large screen, preferably over 40 inches.
Thanks for your kind assistance.
