It allows you to set the timings, scan rates, correct for
overscan/underscan, etc. coming out of the video card. I got a VGA to
component cable and did a lot of playing and a ton of research to try
to get a decent desktop. I have a CRT projection and it was very
challenging, not sure if a plasma will be any easier.

After many nights of frusteration with powerstrip timings, I got a VGA
to Component transcoder from rat shack for ~$100 and it works great.
Still gives me a 480i signal on the TV, but the images look much better
than burning JPGs to a DVD. Not sure why there.

Yeah, well, bitch at the TV makers. Computer monitors sync to all sorts of signals, even totally fscked up ones, with no problems.

LCD TVs, which use *exactly* the same technology, sync only to a very narrow range of signals, and then only if you hold your mouth just right while plugging in the cable. I'm guessing that the makers save about $5 on a $2,500 TV by using garbage circuitry rather than decent stuff.

No-one can tell me why my Sharp comes up all green and I have to toggle the color space from RGB to YCrCm and back to get normal colors.... Sharp says, "yes we show you how to hook up a computer to the TV, but we don't support it."
