Most folks that I know go for the XS for the value. I may have failed
to mention it, but the XBR also has a FireWire interface, which the XS
does not. I believe the iLINK is the FireWire interface.
The real issue to me is the super fine pitch tube which both have in
common. When I was purchasing my most recent set the 34XS was running
at about $2,100. The HS420, one step down, was on sale for $1,449.
Even though the HS420 does not have the super fine pitch tube, it has
an awesome picture. I am very picky about picture quality, but I
couldn't see $500 worth of picture quality improvement in the XS, so I
went with the HS420. If the prices had been closer I would certainly
have purchased the XS. Now the XS is priced very competitively.
>>From what distance will you be watching your tv? For a 34" set, like
the 34XS, you should try very hard to sit no further than 7-8 feet to
really get the benefit of the super fine pitch tube. If you sit much
further back than 7-8 feet the detail begins to get lost, and you might
want to consider the HS420 for value.
