Just my 2 cents. Which tuner that will work for you depends on your
loacation in relationship to the broadcast towers. It's pretty much that
simple. If you are within 25 miles and unobstructed, you can probably use
any of the tuners with a decent antenna system. If you are farther out
than that, then you will likely have problems with 1st-4th generation
tuners. I have 2 HD tuner card models here, 45 miles from the towers with
a good antenna system (8 bay bow tie system rated for 60 miles). One
tuner, with latest (5th gen) tuner works well and I get a OTA digital
stations without a problem. The older cards won't pick up anything. Not
one single station. So this should give you some idea of what you need to
look for in a set top box.

I believe you will find that most of the problems with 1-4 generation receivers happen inside the 25 mile radius. I see more reports of decent reception at distances beyond 25 miles and most reports of problems closer in the the transmitters.

More clutter and multipath usually closer to the transmitter.

One dealer in White Plains New York was selling 4th gen receivers and saying they were very good. When he first tried a 5th generation receiver he then admitted that NO receiver, 1-4 generation, had ever been able to pick up any stations at his store. With the 5th gen LG innotech tuner he got all of them. So his experience is similar to yours.

But in my opinion the 5th gen receivers on the market from LG and the ones this dealer was raving about are NOT nearly as good as the prototype we tested over 18 months ago and NO 8-VSB receiver prototype or otherwise should even be considered in the same discussion with a vintage COFDM receiver from say 1999.

The only interesting news so far in 8-VSB denial land is the recent announcement from Rohde and Schwarz and Samsung that they will try a radical new approach to 8-VSB that will make all current receivers obsolete. Though they deny that. The only thing not obsolete about current receivers will be their ability to receive SD MPEG2 minimal programming from broadcasters.
