You can get HDTV (ATSC) Tuner cards for under $100.

Actually, I'd think the newer tuner cards are better than most set top
boxes since the newer cards use the newest tuners. The set top box also
uses a tuner that is no different than the ones on the PC tuner cards. So
other than some different tuners, what makes you think there would be any
difference.

I've compared 2 different tuner cards. Fusion HDTV5 Gold and an older
AIr2PC card (Rev.02). The Fusion has a 5th generation tuner and works
well here. I can't lock onto a signal with the older cards using an older
tuner. I'm 40+ miles from the broadcast towers with antenna in attic. I'll
be moving the antenna on top of the house but am not real hopeful the
older cards will work then either. I've heard they have about a 30 mile
limit. So either the newer tuner makes a difference, or I haven't got the
proper drivers or somerthing for the older cards. The Fusion card cost
$135 with remote. The older cards cost $50 each. I bought 3 of them to
fill out what will be a 4 tuner HTPC in the end. I've read a lot about uhf
signals in the last week or so and that up to 50% of the signal can be
lost with an antenna in the attic. I'll find out sometime next week I hope.
