They both wear out, but not in exactly the same way. Plasmas, CRTs and
OLEDs get darker over time because they work by emitting light while LCDs
get whiter over time because they work by filtering light from another
source.
CRT and LCD projector TVs wear out much faster than direct view TVs because
the light at the active element is many times more intense because it has to
provide all the light for what might be a 70" screen though an element just
a few inches across whereas in a direct view CRT or LCD, the light intensity
is spread across the entire screen at a much lower level.
Almost all new commercial theater installations are DLP front projectors
instead of LCD these days and that's not expected to change any time soon.
All that said, plasmas are most pleaseing to my eyes because colour and
response time matter more to me than more pixels or inches.
