I do not deal with the Samsung sets very much. We avoid selling them unless we have to. I have not heard much about newer sets from other servicers, but have not engaged conversation on the matter. With the downward price pressure you could get either result. They could fix problems in new, more efficacious designs or they could cut costs and quality and build them poorly. Based on the track record, I would not feel comfortable selling them. As I have said, what concerned me most were reports of a wide variety of problems, not just patterns like the color wheels or the lamps. When you see failures in patterns they are easy to fix in subsequent designs. More varied failure modes requires a larger rethinking of how you build things.

Thanks again for the information. I think you have a good point. What all those repairs point to, I am afraid, is a company philosophy that does not put quality first.

I suggest that readers do a bit more research than just asking Leonard. While I have no doubt that Leonard is conscientious in reporting accurately based on what he knows about the Samsungs, his information (by his own description above) is almost purely anecdotal and hearsay, and is based on reports from a very limited group of service people who may have agendas of their own. He has never sold nor worked on these sets.

Go read up on the Samsung units on the AVS forum. You will find that there are occasional failures reported, but that the vast, VAST, majority of Samsung owners are delighted with their sets. Color wheel failures do occur, but they are very rare.

If you do the research, you are likely to find that Samsung sets do seem to have more reports of problems than other DLP sets. However, you will also find that there are more Samsung DLPs sold than perhaps all other DLP vendors combined. In the aggregate, their failure rate seems to be consistent with the rest of the industry, perhaps lower.

Leonard will disagree, which is fine - he and I have discussed this before. He is reporting on his observations and experience, and I on mine. Do your own research.

Here's some more anecdotal evidence for you: Like tens of thousands of others, I'm delighted with my Samsung set. I've owned it for two years, and I've never had a problem with its color wheel or light projection. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another set from Samsung. Contrary to your thoughts above on company philosophy, I find Samsung to be more concerned about quality and customer support than most manufacturers.
