Freezing/artifacting after about 30 minutes of watching

This seems to be a very specific problem. I am a Time Warner customer
with their Scientif Atlanta HDTV setbox with DVR. If I leave it on one
HD station for over 30 minutes, I start seeing the picture freezing or
artifacting. I can then do a quick channel change, go back to the same
program, and the picture will be fine again for about that 30 minute
period again. If I try to use the picture-in-picture feature I get the
same results. It seems to somehow deal with the DVR feature, and how
much has been stored while watching. It took me some time to diagnose
this issue or at least narrow it down to when it happens. Do you think
this is box related, or just that it can't handle to amount of data,
and perhaps just a shortcoming in the box design itself?
