Some fragments on the topic of resolution.

Resolution along a line is by my understanding the same parameter
whether it is expressed "per inch", or by "per image side".
A camera, for example can of course specify resolution "per inch" of
its image sensor but then you need to know the size and optics etc to
calculate the resolution "per image side" that is easier to relate to.
I think the same applies to a display. The size must be known to
calculate back and forth between resolution "per inch" and resolution
"per image side".
The parameter is still the same but expressed in a different unit.
The common praxis is that when the unit is left out it means "per
image side"
The method of expressing the resolution in "Lines of resolution" where
the unit "per image side" has been used a very long time.
Then there is a more difficult matter to understand what "Lines of
resolution" means.
If I understand correctly, for optics and believe also for displays
and in general for video, such a measurement uses a line pattern of
black and white lines and the figure specifies how many of these can
be displayed per image side at the point where the contrast has
decreased a certain percentage.
