Newbie Reception problem

I seem to live too close to my local nbc affiliate, which would be vhf 12. My UHf reception is v poor, 23 and 35 especially and i live within 10 miles of both. My question is am i likely to have same issue with the hdtv programming which is available completely on UHF? Im tempted to try a hdtv set top tuner and bring back if i still have all these local channel problems. Sat/cable does not factor into this problem.Anyone help???? Thanks.
