There's no way casting is going to know how these people
are going to react to a previous player or even how they are
going to react to actually playing the game.

Not with 100% certainty but there is absolutely a psychological
element to the casting process.

The players are constantly being interviewed by staff all the way
up to Day #1 on the island, (and even during game play) to get
a handle on who they are and how this will affect the show and
this is of course factored in when setting up the tribes.

I've long suggested that the tribal make-up should be done by
the players drawing straws the moment they land on the island,
but then Survivor has pretty much abandoned the root concept
of a reality show, its now wholly managed and directed by MB
from start to finish.

Which sucks, as the fun part for me was the quasi-documentary
style of the earlier seasons; dumping a bunch of regular Joe's
on an island and having them compete in challenges.
