Why do you think the show is "in the can?"

While the show is shot well before the broadcast season the editing
contiues throughout the viewing period. MB has stated more than
once the final edit isn't done until hours before the episode airs.
In past seasons we have seen teasers on CBS for incidents that were
never actually shown because of the late edits.

With the hundreds of hours of unused footage each week, MB has
enough material to vary the story as he chooses and is able to
respond to audience reaction.

As the franchise matures we are seeing more blatant pandering for
ratings, the latest being the "Boston Rob vs Russell" gimmick. On
the other hand, without the tuning it is unlikely Survivor 22 would
even exist.
