Obviously it's all about intent. If you are simply curious, and the answer
(either way) is not going to cause you to think less of the person or
treat
them worse, then it's fine to wonder and ask. Shannon, however, was in
attack mode, and his intent was to somehow discredit Sash.

I completely agree. But just because he used the gay question to do
it, doesn't make it gay bashing or homophobia. It just means he used
what he thought would get under Sash's skin the most. It was an
attack on Sash, not an attack on homosexuals.

I'll have to rewatch that because I thought he was gay bashing in the hopes
that enough of the others would be like him and thus vote to evict Sash
instead of him. I'm not saying he didn't want to get under Sash's skin but
it was more like he was trying to say to the others "You wouldn't want to
keep a gay guy in the closet over me would you?"

I didn't interpret it that way at all. I would guess, and this is
purely speculation, that when the tribemates were talking about their
personal lives, Sash did it in an ambiguous enough way (eg - I'm
dating someone right now and they're really happy that I made it on
the show) to make some of them think he was hiding something, and
that, combined with his less than macho persona, started pinging
people's gaydar, but they knew he was uncomfortable admitting to it.
So when he dared to cross Shannon, the first thing that popped into
Shannon's mind to get back at him was to ask him if he's gay, knowing
that was his weak spot, so to speak.

They've only known each other a few days, so if you want to get back
at someone, you've got to use whatever weapons you already have in
your arsenal.
