It sounds to me like we bet on the placement of each player at the
beginning of the season and then our bets stay the same all season. At
the end the closest to the score Jason mentioned without going over
wins.

So you could bet
1 Coach  50 points        (winner)
2 Sugar   46 points        (2nd place)
3 Tyson   1 point          (3rd place)
4 Randy   1 point         (4th place)
5 Danielle  1 point        (5th place)

and if they all finish in that position then you would score it as
follows
Coach   20 * 49 points    980
Sugar   19 * 47 points     893
Tyson   18 *  1 point         18
Randy   17 *  1 point        17
Danielle 16 * 2 point         32

for a grand total of  1940 points which is a perfect score in this
game since the goal is to hit 1940 points without going over.

At least this is how I read it.
