Well, that's always the case. That way if the criminal (and the police
only go after criminals) gets off on the main charge, they will still
have a number of other charges they can press forward with and see to
it that he/she is punished.
Though in this case it seems pretty likely that the guy was running a
hoax which is going to end up costing at least a lot of money.
Right. ANYONE can call the government helicopters and have jets at the
ready...emergency people waiting for the possibly injured child...and
then say
'April Fool'.
They can.. but only on April 1st.. Outside of that day the humor is
lost.
It's free to the taxpayer (which, I'm not so sure that he IS) and he canhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HcOZ6xFxJqg
act like an imbecile in the past AND present.
Well, I never claimed to have all the facts. I only know what was
mentioned on SNL and late night TV.
It sounded pretty funny to me.
A six year old kid in an out of control balloon that could land
anywhere including powerlines isn't to funny until after the kid is
safe and sound, but I know you're kidding.
----
IF, as someone said, they grounded planes at the airports and diverted
incoming flights, that sounds (to me) like simple stupidity on the
part of the airport personnel. They fly around shit like that all the
time just fine.
I don't think out of control balloons that can fly in to other
aircraft's air space including a major airport's take off and landing
routes "...fly around shit..." You don't have uncontrolled balloons
near civil airline traffic routes!!
----
IF, as someone said, there were a BUNCH of emergency personnel
ignoring other duties to track this balloon, that sounds (to me) like
simple stupidity on the emergency personnel. What did they think they
were going to accomplish ??? With all the media hype, all they had to
do was find out where and when it was going to land and send one cop
when it did. Or even just wait for one of the rubber-neckers or media
people to CALL the appropriate emergency personnel if and when they
were needed.
This is a kid. People tend to drop everything when a kid is involved
and besides as I said that balloon could had landed anywhere, perhaps
causing a bigger accident somewhere.
----
IF, as someone said, the parents called the Air Force, and the Air
Force actually DID anything, that sounds like simple stupidity on the
part of the USAF personnel. Why should they be involved in this ???
For the record it was Army Air National Guard helicopters dispatched
from Buckley Air Force Base:
"6-Year-Old Boy Found Safe After Balloon Floats Away
Alderden said he didn't have an estimate of how much the search for
the boy cost.
The Colorado Army National Guard scrambled an OH-58 Kiowa helicopter
and a Black Hawk UH-60 to try to rescue the boy, possibly by lowering
someone to the balloon. The helicopter flights alone cost about
$14,500.
Capt. Troy Brown said the Black Hawk helicopter was in the air for
nearly three hours, and the Kiowa helicopter was airborne for about
one hour. The Black Hawk costs about $4,600 an hour to fly, and the
Kiowa is $700 an hour, Brown said."
later:
"After it was confirmed no one was aboard the balloon, both Colorado
Army National Guard helicopters returned to Buckley Air Force Base to
refuel and prepare for search and rescue operations.
Airlife Denver -- a medical helicopter -- also joined in the search
for the boy from the air."
Both: http://www.thedenverchannel.com/news/21306839/detail.html
The parents called the media, then 911 in that order, not the air
force. BTW, It was what made every one really suspicious that it was
a Hoax, calling the media first.
---
IF, as I know, the media committed a BUNCH of resources to tracking
and reporting and hyping this as though it were some kind of HUGE
story, then that sounds (to me) like simple stupidity on the part of
the media personnel. Don't they have any REAL news to report ???
See above, when a kid is involved its all hands on deck.
----
Punishing someone stupid for fooling other pathetic stupid people just
seems ridiculous to me.
You don't see how lying about a child in danger in a way that could
potentially harm other people is more than a minor prank?
----
Is it not considered freedom of speech to point to a balloon and say
"my son is inside that thing" ???
When you know it is a lie no it is not. That is equivalent to the old
caution against yelling fire in a crowed theater when there isn't
one. Seriously, you think it is free speech to lie about a child in
danger? You have heard of incitement to riot laws? How about
disturbing the peace?
