I just received this notice---Please note that on or around July 15,
2009, AT&T will no longer be
offering access to the Usenet netnews service. If you wish to
continue reading Usenet newsgroups, access is available through
third-party vendors.

So I need the expertise of you guys, except Doob, because I don't
have WebTV. I suppose I could go through Google groups, but I don't
know how to get it through Outlook Express. So I need some options,
people! Please keep in mind that simplicity and expense are both
factors.

I just use google groups ... If you don't need to read any groups that
have binaries ... it is fine ... You don't need any other software ...
just go to google groups ... subscribe to the groups you wish to read,
set up notifications and other options you'd like ... and you have
it ... make up a yahoo or aol email address to stop some of the spam
you may get ...
One drawback to some is the lack of a killfile feature ... but just
ignoring those you wish to ignore works for me ...

The lack of a killfile is a concern. Another one is, do google groups post
my actual e-mail? I get enough spam on my yahoo account as it is. On Outlook
Express, I was able to set it up to show only what I wanted. Hence the
"@somewhere". I  was in the process of setting up a Google account when you
posted, and used my usual e-mail. I have not and will not activate it since
reading your warning.

That's why I suggested setting up another email account you don't care
about ... although I get a lot of spam on the aol email ... it seemed
to be all in place before I even moved to google groups ... aol
addresses were very easily obtained for spam mailings ... I don't feel
google groups increased it measureably ...
interestingly ... some emails get thrown into the spam file by aol ...
but they are legitimate mass mailings from web sites I wish to hear
from ... while many times the spam that obviously should be rejected
show up as regular mail ...
