Given what they showed in the previous show with Jeff forcing James to
let medical take a look at his finger immediately after the TC (before
anyone had even gotten up) it seems obvious that the producers/medical
staff think his situation is serious. They had obviously looked at it
earlier that day or the day before given that his finger was bandaged
up and there was nothing on it at the start of the show.
From what I could see, James' finger is/was badly infected which is
life threatening.

It depends if the infection is spreading and can't be controlled with oral antibiotics. Jonathan Penner's infection was very serious because it arose from a puncture wound which drove the germs deep into the tissues, right near the bone.
About 8 years ago, I had a large infected abscess on my back that was over 3 cm in diameter. I walked around with it for a month before I chose to see a doctor to have it lanced.
