I'm a fan of space exploration, but the shuttle program is a huge
waste. With all the money that's gone into it, it's still far too
dangerous and expensive to be used often enough to be worthwhile. The
only reason it survives is that they've spread the pork barrel around
the country so most congressional districts get a piece of it.
There's a lot of interest in developing private space flight for
things like tourism, but that's been stifled because NASA doesn't want
the competition.

Not that any of that's Dan's fault, of course. Given how often the
shuttles blow up, there's no doubting his courage.
