But by doing this, you are chilling the expression of free speech
within this newsgroup.
I don't think so.
Now people may be afraid to use bad language or insulting words
because John H might report them to their ISP. I don't know about you,
but I would like people on usenet to feel free to put whatever they
want, as long as it isn't invasive to the system as a whole, i.e. spam
etc.
First, one complaint isn't going to do jack from an ISPs point of view.
It'll take hundreds before they bother, if enough people complain, then
jerkoffs do get booted. That's the thing about usenet, its supposed to
be selfpolicing; you can't just go the cops and complain.
You're OK with people being able to post racial insults? You're OK
with James doing a racial troll, but you're not OK with spammers.
Where's the spammer's freedom of speech? Where's his right to not be
censored? At least he has an excuse, he's trying to make a living,
trolls like James has nothing good going for them.
I actually don't have a huge problem with small spams, certainly not
enough to outlaw it. As I stated above, anything that is disruptive to
the system as a whole bothers me.
Who determines what is disruptive to the system? For me, racist trolls
are disruptive, for you, massive spamming. You, also, pick what you are
offended by.
Massive spam, for instance, would infringe on our rights to speak freely
because it would make the system uneasy to use. Like if you had to scroll
through hundreds of pages of spam to get to a legitimate post. It's not
an issue of content, just an issue of use.
Same here, a guy posting nothing but a racial insult contributes nothing
to this newsgroup. If you don't see that as disruptive to the group, but
only believes that freespeech ensures every idiot to say what he wants,
then you can't complain about spam either. Freespeech isn't everything,
there are limits. Enforcing censorship on one type of speech while
damning mine is hypocritical.

I will concede your point, only if you will accept that I would take ten
million spams (and I do in some NGs) in order to protect the right for a
single poster to say "gook" or whatever he wants.
Or, ten million individual spammers each making 1 post.
