You know, my parents used to use *a* drop of tabasco sauce on our
tongues if we said "bad" words.  It isn't new, though using it in
place of any other punishment seems to be.  Certainly taught me to
swear under *my* breath (for years).

My brother practiced putting hot sauce on his tongue, so that it
wouldn't 'bother' him as much.  We all preferred that to getting a few
swats (never more than 3) or being told to go sit in our rooms and
"think about what we did, and what would be appropriate".

This particular case sounds more like some of the problems associated with
overseas adoptions.  Some children with reactive attachment disorder, etc.
I don't agree with this mothers particular discipline methods.  I think
perhaps her intentions are well-meaning, but she doesn't have any level of
experience or knowledge as to how to deal with this poor child.  Many
therapists haven't had much luck dealing with the disorders presented from
many Russian orphans.

It isn't just Russian orphans, but any orphans from areas that have
been ravaged by people or the environment. I realize that these
people really want children, but they never seem to realize that
sometimes taking "the only option" they see available, is not the best
idea out there.

  It's just a guess that the mother may have
fundamentalist beliefs, because her methods, the hot sauce & cold showers,
have been recommended by Dobson and his followers.

Hot sauce and cold showers have been used for decades, way before
funamentalist Christians took it in their own strange direction. A
friend's parents used to use either cold showers, or ice water, to
"get their attention", at least 40 years ago (and they were far from
"Fundy").
