An 88-year-old man accused of killing his wife of 70 years at her
nursing home was charged Tuesday with murder, prosecutors said.

Roy Laird, of Seal Beach, is charged with one felony count of murder
and a sentencing enhancement for the fatal use of a firearm. He walked
into Country Villa Healthcare Center on Sunday and allegedly shot his
86-year-old wife, Clara, in the head while she was laying in bed.



The couple's daughter, Kathy Palmateer, has called the shooting a
"mercy killing."

Clara Laird, who was in late-stage dementia and required 24-hour care,
was unable to feed herself, walk, sit up in a wheelchair or even
recognize many of the people close to her.

Roy Laird, who is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday afternoon, faces a
maximum sentence of 50 years in prison -- the rest of his life -- if
convicted.


Fifty years, huh? Well that should teach him! Do you think 50 yrs will rehabilitate him back into society?

Thank god I had the right to put my beloved best girl to sleep when her oral melanoma spread to her brain.

In many ways, we are kinder to our pets than to our older people. In fact, we might even be charged with animal abuse if we forced our animals to live with the type of pain that our elderly people sometimes have to endure.
