LAGUNA WOODS – A 94-year-old man died late Friday night when his
roommate at a rehabilitation hospital beat him on the head with a
metal pole, Orange County Sheriff's officials said.

"What prompted the attack is still under investigation. Obviously,
this is very unusual," Sheriff's spokesman Jim Amormino said.

Deputies arrested William McDougall, 81, of Mission Viejo, on
suspicion of murder.

The victim's name has not been released because his family has not
been notified.

Both men were patients at the Palm Terrace Healthcare and
Rehabilitation Center, 24962 Calle Aragon.

After he was struck, the victim was taken to Saddleback Memorial
Medical Center, where he died.

Detectives believe the pole may have been a rung used to hang clothes
in the closet.

The rehabilitation center's staff told investigators that there had
never been incidents between the two men before, Amormino said.

Well, never too old to get your head bashed in, eh? What kind of
punishment would be appropriate for an 81 year old? Send him back to
the Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, with emphasis on
rehabilitation?
