Hi Michael,

What's negative about "chick"?

Before I answer the question, I'd like to say, that I don't have a
personal problem with being called "chick", because I'm too damn old to
care how someone else chooses to view me or identify me.

That said, some women find the term offensive because they feel it
dehumanizes them on a number of levels. They feel that they are people,
not animals. They feel that the critter in question is an infant, not an
adult, so calling a woman "chick" could be compared to calling a man
"boy". The critter in question is also a bird, an animal which in our
culture is viewed as a set of edible breasts and legs, with so little
brain that if you lop off its head, it takes ages to recognize the fact
that it's dead.

I think that covers it all.

OK, but that's "some women". And it's their "feelings", not
something objective, and nothing to do with the intent of the
speaker. So far as I know, "chick" in this context comes from
the spanish "chica", which merely means a small girl.

I feel that those interpretations of the word "chick" have been
foisted on us by feminism. Women have been actively encouraged
to "feel" that way about the word by other women (and men) who
have an agenda.

"Male chauvinist", on the other hand, is unquestionably meant to
be a pejorative. And if no one discourages feminists from using
that term, I'll be damned if I'll give up using "chick" (not that
I use it much anyway).
