Do you mean the typical media distortion
of semi-litterate, drawled, non sequiturs and declensions,
or the syntactical inconsistences that arise from colloquial usage
instead of formal education in grammatical structure?
I was just using John's own phrasing back at him. I think I know what
he means, but one never knows with him.
In my own definition, "speaking Southern" is more about tone of voice,
facial expression, and body language. It isn't about what's said.
That's what makes it so hard to communicate with some southerners, the
hidden cues that you don't see, mean everything to them (not all
southerners, obviously, but nearly everyone I've ever met). I've
lived in all four corners of the US, and now I live in the middle, and
the South was the most "non-verbal" area.
