A home invader of a different sort -

Science fiction story I read a long time ago:

Seems the animals had evolved after millions
of years to where they were as smart as humans.
So, they decided to revolt and claim their natural
territory back from the humans .... all but the dogs.
The dogs had been our friends for millenia, and
now, they stood with us and guarded against
the coming invasion.
