Hey TD,

Berry says officers found the infant in the living room with bite wounds
on her head. The baby was pronounced dead at the scene.

The dog, a chow, was quarantined.

Chows are nasty dogs. In 35 years of working with animals, I've known
maybe 5 full-blooded chows that weren't dangerous. Mix them with just
about any other breed and you end up with a great dog, but if they're
full-blooded, they scare me way worse than any pit bull ever has scared
me.

As for quarantining an animal that has killed someone...

The reason for a 10-day quarantine when a dog or cat bites a human being
is that if the animal bit the person *because it has rabies*, it will be
dead within 10 days. So if the animal is alive at the end of the 10-day
period, the bite victim doesn't have to undergo a series of rabies
vaccines (which are given in the ass now, not the belly, but still it
ain't much fun).

In the 80s, we had a dog kill a child in our area and the dog was
immediately quarantined in the shelter where I worked. I went to my boss
and asked, "Why are we quarantining this dog when the victim is dead and
therefor not in danger of getting rabies? Since the owners have
surrendered the dog for euthanasia, why can't we go ahead and put it to
sleep?" He pondered the question and then said, "You're right. We
shouldn't have to quarantine this animal. Let me make a couple calls." He
was a political animal and I'm sure he called the Mayor to make sure there
wouldn't be any flak over a decision like that. He called me back to his
office about 30 minutes later and authorized the euthanasia.

Hi Dani,

I couldn't agree more about chows. One of the reasons I disagree with breed
banning. Once all the pit bulls are out-lawed, the chow is a perfect choice
for the low-lives to pick up on as a replacement, unfortunately. The only
thing I disagree with you on is a mix. As cute as some of those puppies
are, I personally just can't get past my aversion to a *chow*/anything.
Just me, I guess. But I figure why get a 'chow/lab' when I could get a
'lab/golden' or 'lab/shepherd, ya know.

I'm happy that Chihuahuas are so little, because next to chows, they come in
second for me in the *nasty* dept. If they had more size to them, they
could really do some damage. Yeah, I know they still can, to a small child.

The main reason I posted this story was the parents were both members of LE,
and there were other dogs in the home. I haven't checked out the news yet
today, but I wondered what and how many other dogs were in the home.
Whether any of them were *police* dogs, had training, etc. Just curiosity
on my part. The mother was some sort of tribal enforcement, but the dad was
local LE.
