Three-Year-Old Found Frozen to Death

How can people leave their home so vulnerable to a three year old they know
has gotten out before? poor baby, out in single digit weather, in nothing
but a diaper and tee shirt.

MAMAKATING, N.Y. (WPIX) -- A three year old girl was found dead in the snow
Wednesday near her parent's home in upstate New York. New York State police
say Cassandra Weronick wandered out of the Aldrich Road residence overnight.
Her family did not realize she was missing until the morning.
PIX News has learned from officials the little girl had done something
similar to this in the past. This time, however, her walk ended in tragedy
three-quarters of a mile from her home on a hill on Mountaintop Road. Police
say she was found in the snow, barefoot and wearing only a diaper and a
T-shirt. Temperatures were reported to be in the single digits.
Officials say the family began searching for the girl when they realized she
was missing. According to reports, Cassandra's father Douglas Weronick heard
a call over a neighbor's police scanner alerting dispatchers of a child in
cardiac arrest. Minutes later, Weronick was said to have discovered his
daughter's body in a snow bank along the road.
A passer-by initially found the toddler laying in the snow around 7 a.m. and
called police.
"At first (the neighbor) thought it was a doll," state police Lt. Brian
Shortall told the Times Herald-Record. "But then she got out of her car, saw
that it was a child and called 911."
Investigators say the child likely died from exposure. An autopsy was
scheduled for Wednesday evening.
The family has two other young children.
The Sullivan County town of Mamakating is located about 70 miles northwest
of New York City.
