I suspect the motive was to leave no witnesses.   Why he took
the boy out of the house, I can't really guess.

Maybe he thought he could convince the kid not to
tell on him -- but it didn't work.

The first two murders might possibly be crimes of passion.
But the murder of the boy was cold-blooded, calculated, and
definitely first degree murder.

By the way, there doesn't yet appear to be any "smoking gun"
in this case.  The police still have a lot of work ahead of
them.  The boy was found in the van, but there isn't yet
any evidence to link Balfour to being in the van when the
boy died.  There also is no ballistic evidence to tie him
to the other two murders.  If they rush to trial (and Balfour
has the right to a speedy trial, now that he's been charged),
I'm afraid he'll probably get an acquittal.

I don't. They picked him up not long after the Oct
24th murders, and they've been developing their
case ever since. They didn't charge him until they
had everything nailed down.

I think he'll cop a plea.

Balfour blabbed to his current girlfriend, his cellphone
tracks to the murder location until after the shootings,
the gun used to kill Hudson's mother and brother was
found near the Suburban, when it was discovered with
the boy inside.

Unless he's smarter than he's seemed so far, they've
also got his cellphone tracked to the location of the
Suburban.

Also, he made statements to the police that turned
out to be easily confirmed as lies (transit card usage,
for instance).

He threatened Julia at work; if co-workers were nearby
and heard, that isn't going to help him.

I think people now know that circumstantial evidence,
coupled with witnesses, will be strong -- regardless of
what his defense attorney says, to get him out on
bail (yikes!)
