Cary, N.C. - Police seized a diamond pendant necklace belonging to a slain
Cary woman during a recent search of her home, according to a search warrant
released Friday.
Investigators searched the home late Wednesday, two days after Brad Cooper,
35, was indicted on a charge of murder in the July death of wife, Nancy
Cooper.
Nancy Cooper's body was found July 14 in an undeveloped subdivision three
miles from the Coopers' Cary home. A state medical examiner's autopsy found
she had likely been strangled.
Brad Cooper told police his wife went jogging at about 7 a.m. on July 12 and
never returned home. Through his attorneys, he has denied being involved
with her slaying, but has admitted to police that he and his wife were
having marital difficulties.
Nancy Cooper's friends and family told investigators that she wore a diamond
pendant necklace everywhere she went, but Brad Cooper told investigators
after her death that he had the necklace at the house.
Police also seized two cell phones and various computer equipment from the
home. Investigators said Brad Cooper received and read two e-mails on a cell
phone on the day his wife's body was found.
Four pairs of shoes also were taken from the home. Brad Cooper told
investigators that a pair of his wife's running shoes were missing from the
garage the day his wife disappeared. An autopsy report stated Nancy Cooper
was wearing only a sports bra when her body was found.
A Cary Police Department investigator said in his application for the search
warrant that he had seen two mismatched running shoes - both for the right
foot - on a shelf in Cooper's garage during an August search but was unable
to find the matching left shoes.
A judge on Thursday set a Dec. 5 hearing to determine whether prosecutors
should be allowed to seek the death penalty in the case.
Nancy Cooper's family filed for and gained granted temporary custody of her
two children, claiming Brad Cooper was emotionally abusive to his wife in
the months prior to her death.
