OCALA, Fla. (AP) ? A federal judge has refused to dismiss a lawsuit that
claims CNN's Nancy Grace pushed the mother of a missing toddler to suicide
through aggressive questioning.

CNN and Grace argued the wrongful death lawsuit brought by Melinda Duckett's
family would "severely chill" journalists' coverage of missing-persons
cases. But U.S. District Judge William Terrell Hodges on Thursday denied
their motion to dismiss the lawsuit.

This somewhat reminds of the lawsuit against 'The Jenny Jones' show in which
a guest was murdered after he admitted on the show that he had a crush on
another man. The $29.3M verdict was overturned on appeal. Then upheld by
the U.S. Supreme Court.

The plaintiffs attorney argued at trial that the murder was foreseeable -
and actionable. Are you kidding me?

What if a reporter from (CBS News') '60 Minutes' confronts an executive with
an incriminating document during an interview and that executive goes home
and causes harm to himself or somebody else, '60 Minutes' is liable. That is
the message of this verdict and I think everyone in the media and everyone
who cares about free speech in this country should be very concerned.

It all depends on whether the executive is guilty of something. You
can say something bad about someone else, but if it's untrue, it is
libel or slander. If it's true, it's not libel or slander, although
it might constitute invasion of privacy or harassment in some
situations.

What about those high-speed chase broadcasts on local news? Some say
suspects flee in order to get on local news. If a bystander gets hurt,
should he sue the guy who flies the "skycam" helicopter?

Yes, and they should be able to sue the police department which
quietly encourages those chases because it thinks they are good for
p.r.
