Neighbors recount frantic search, tragic discovery
MANNS HARBOR, N.C.
The temperature inside the car was 135 degrees.
No one is quite sure how long Amy Cooper's toddler daughters were
trapped in
the two-tone Mercury Topaz that sat in their neighbor's driveway. But
by the
time sheriff's deputies found them in the back seat Friday afternoon,
it was
too late.
The 18-month-old died shortly after. The 2-year-old died early
Saturday
morning.
"It just appears to be a very tragic accident," Dare County Sheriff's
Lt.
Bill Godley said. "Everybody that was involved in this was touched.
We had
two young children who just died right there."
The girls, whose names the Sheriff's Department refused to release
Saturday,
had been playing with their 4-year-old brother outside their family's
trailer off rural Ina Waterfield Road when they climbed into the
unlocked
car Friday. They were unable to get out.
Somebody has to start the rant, so why not me. WHERE THE *** WAS THEIR
DIRTBAG MOTHER DURING ALL OF THIS? A 4 year old, a 2 year old and an 18
month old outside by themselves? You have got to be kidding me. She
should be charged with neglect.
At least! These mothers who "accidentally" leave their babies in hot
cars
should face at least 2nd degree murder charges. Doesn't sound to be
the case here, so we should hit this piece of *** with two counts
of child endangerment AND neglect, with the maximum sentence after
the guilty conviction. These cases enrage me. The mother usually
walks after these horrendous crimes.

I don't know about that, but on another note. Isn't it against the law
to abandon refridgerators outdoors without the doors being secure?
What's the difference between than and an abandoned car? Or any car I
guess? I'm wondering if she'd have checked the car right away, the
children may have been saved?

It looked to me like they lived fairly close to the sound. It sounds
like the moment she couldn't find the kids, that's where everyone headed,
thinking they had wandered down to the sound. Probably what I'd do too,
before checking anybody's cars, I'd be running towards the water. :(

I had a friend who's toddler, along with her sister's toddler - both kids
died together inside a neighbor's car on a hot day, where they'd
apparently gone to play. No one gave a thought that they might have been
able to open the door, but they could and did. Then apparently didn't know
how to open it again. This happened many years before I knew my friend.
Everybody, including LE, IIRC, searched high and low for hours and hours
before their little bodies were discovered. Maybe that's why I always
think I'd check the car first, if it were me. But water - dunno, maybe I'd
run there first? I didn't see any pics of the trailer etc. Don't think I
want to. Maybe the mother was negligent, or - ? Whatever.

If you look through the pictures at this link, there is a photo of outside,
where the kids were playing. And there is also a map showing how close to
the sound they were. Now I'd probably think to check cars, but when the
twins got out of my daughters house one day, we went running towards the
neighbors house, up the street. Headed that way because my daughter caught
a glimpse of one of her dogs rounding a corner. Thank goodness the boys
took the dogs with 'em.
