People get these Charles Bronson vigilante fantasies, and want to base
laws on the hope that someday they can be the hero that kills the
awful baby killer.

I'm not sure what you're saying here. The passerby witnesses should just
stand and watch? I agree with you on the gun stance but I don't see how
anyone could stand there and do... nothing.

No, that's not what I'm saying. I said earlier on the thread, if you're
carrying a stun gun or a knife or just have the physical prowess, save a
life.

See the part of the paragraph above that says "want to base laws". As in,
should we issue every yahoo without a criminal record a carry permit?

I don't like the idea. Someone used this story to talk about whether a
little old lady with a .357 in her purse could have made all the
difference - and gee, it was a little old lady who owns a .357 who made the
comment. Hence the fantasy aspect (as if that isn't obvious and, in
fairness, normal).

I tried to point out that things don't work out like they do in the movies.
Bullets ricochet. Even from 20 feet away you can miss someone. Ironically,
I have on one of those dumb "world's cheapest police video reality
productions" on right now, and just watched the police fire 40 rounds at a
guy in a pickup, from probably 30 feet away, and he lived. Bullets just
aren't very predictable.

And when you get within 20 feet of someone, there is a danger they'll snatch
the gun and you've provided them with a weapon. This is a danger with cops,
much less untrained civilians, who might be elderly, have limited mobility
and/or slow reactions.

Bonus points: most violent crimes take place at night, when many of those
law abiding citizens out and about who might be legally carrying a firearm
have also been drinking. Do the math.

Hope that clears up my point.
