BLOOMINGTON -- Jurors in the rape and stalking trial of Jeff Pelo
ended their first full day of deliberations Tuesday without reaching
verdicts on the 35 criminal charges pending against the former police
sergeant.
The jurors were taken to a local hotel at 8:30 p.m.
Before dinner, attorneys for the state and defense and Pelo were
brought to the courtroom to consider two questions from the jury,
including a question about a phrase not found in a jury instruction.
Attorneys agreed that the phrase ?while armed with a knife? was
inadvertently omitted from an instruction read to the jury before they
started deliberations Monday afternoon.
The second question asked shortly after the first one focused on the
wording in two counts related to offenses committed while the man
believed to be Pelo was armed with a weapon.
Jurors started their second day of deliberations at 9 a.m. Tuesday.
Breakfast and lunch were brought to the panel of six men and women,
who have been sequestered at a local hotel at the end of
deliberations.
The consideration of a verdict follows a five-week trial in which
jurors heard testimony that Pelo, 43, used his resources as a police
officer to stalk and sexually assault women.
The jury is considering a total of 35 counts, including 25 counts of
sexual assault involving four women between 2002 to 2005. He also is
accused of stalking a fifth woman.
