Only five months to rule it a homicide.

Man found buried in beach sand was strangled
San Francisco Chronicle Staff Report
Friday, June 13, 2008

(06-13) 10:12 PDT SAN FRANCISCO -- The death of a 41-year-old man
whose body was found in January buried face down at Ocean Beach in San
Francisco with only his feet sticking through the sand has been ruled
a homicide, authorities said today.

The victim, who was identified as Paul Lenz, was found Jan. 15 by two
youths trying to build a bonfire on the beach.

An autopsy showed that Lenz apparently was strangled, said Rich
Weideman, spokesman for the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.
Lenz's body was severely bruised and several ribs were broken.

He was naked, except for a pair of socks.

U.S. Park Service police said Lenz was not from California and had
been identified through his fingerprints. Their investigation is
continuing.

Sounds like an anonymous-gay-cruise encounter gone wrong.

I wish they'd list the victim's age. There is (or was) a Dr. Paul Lenz
in
Texas who was a jail physician, I'd find that an interesting connection if
he was the victim.

More from the Examiner:

Lenz appeared to be in his mid-40s, was overweight and looked very
pale, National Park Service spokesman Rich Weideman said. With Lenz
being found with only a pair of socks on, three cloth bracelets around
his left wrist and an ?abstract? tattoo on his chest, U.S. Park Police
investigators had little in the way of clues.

Federal authorities, who are investigating the homicide because the
body was found on national park land, originally considered the death
suspicious because it was clear that the body was deliberately buried
in the sand.

The medical examiner?s report, however, concluded that there was much
more to Lenz?s death. He was severely beaten, with dozens of bruises
and cuts about his head and body. At least one blow had cracked the
man?s skull and several of his ribs were broken.

In addition, the toxicology report revealed Lenz?s blood alcohol
content was about 0.25 percent, three times the legal limit. Traces of
the active ingredient in Benadryl were also found in Lenz?s blood. The
two in combination multiply their respective effects, leading to
delirium and drowsiness.

On Jan. 15, shortly after 4 a.m., two youths looking for a place to
start a bonfire on the beach came upon the body after being told by
park police to use a designated fire pit.

They found the victim, who has since been identified as 41-year-old
Paul Lenz, buried face down, with only a pair of white socks on his
feet sticking out from the sand.

Lenz was reportedly not from the Bay Area originally and investigators
reached his family in another state.

According to Weideman, he was identified by fingerprint records from a
federal database.

Thanks for the additional info. Guess it couldn't be the jail physician
from Brownsville, he graduated from medical school in 1985, making me think
he's in his late 40s. Another intriguing theory shot down by those pesky
facts.
