I really think this "homeschooling" nonsense has gone too far. I think
there needs to be way more oversight than many states now have. I
think they need to take tests at least 3 or 4 times per year to prove
they are at the proper level of learning, and their "teachers" need to
be tested as well.

I think of myself as a reasonably intelligent and educated person. But
I would never think I could properly teach my children all the subjects
they need to know to be fully educated. The world is changing. Women
need to know more than how to bake cake and do laundry to survive.
They need education in a variety of subjects.

I have known many, many children who were "homeschooled". Usually they
were taken out of school because of a lack of social skills of their
own, or their parents. They are usually very socially awkward, and
fall behind socially and educationally in short time. Only a couple I
knew were actually very bright and benefitted from homeschooling. And
both of them had teachers as parents.

I think it depends upon the circumstances. Those who seclude themselves
away from society and home school are one thing. There was a family in
our old neighborhood who homeschooled. I'd meet the kids almost every
day when I was out walking my dogs. I think they had six kids, but I
never really asked the kids how many of them there were. The kids were
all very nice, very respectful, extremely talkative and friendly. There
were mostly boys, and the two eldest were the ones I spoke to most
often. They were teenagers, possibly around 14 and 16. One of their
little brothers was terrified of dogs. He looked to be between 2 and 3
years old. If he was outside, one of the big brothers would always pick
him up if he saw me coming, cause the little one was afraid of the two
big dogs. I was impressed with how kind and considerate all of the kids
were towards each other. The older ones were always looking out for the
younger ones. I usually walked my dogs about the same time each day,
mid-afternoon, so I think I always caught them at their 'break time'.

Around here the only people I've actually known who home school, did so
because they weren't satisfied with the school system or the curriculum.
I've not personally known any of the 'away from society' ones. I'm sure
they do it for others reasons. I do agree with the concept of frequent
testing and curriculum requirements. And I certainly agree that a
disproportionate number of them are involved in abuse, neglect, and
shocking crimes.

I've said this before, but not for some time. TRUE homeschooling, by good
parent-teachers, produces exceptional students. I couldn't do it. Many
couldn't do it, apparently. But some do it and do it great. Then there
are the other types of parents who can't get it together for one reason
or another, that is, can't get it together to send their kids to
conventional school for one reason or another, and so they proclaim "I'm
home schooling my/our children," when in fact they are doing no such
thing. Like Sean's mother, in that other thread (she was found guilty of
killing him and she abused ALL of her many children horribly).
Unfortunately, "home schooling" has taken on a whole new - and bad -
meaning, because of all the nutters out there who grab on to it. It
probably makes the real ones ashamed to be lumped in with the nutty ones.
Too bad.

What I don't understand is why they aren't monitored more. Maybe they
are, I guess I'm not up on that and have never known anybody that has home
schooled a child or known a person that was. But why are there
restrictions for teachers in public schools to have teaching degrees, but
none on people who choose to home school their kids. I mean, cripes, can
just anybody want to do that if they so choose? What about those poor
kids that have abusive, psychotic, or sexually perverted parents that want
to home school their kids (so nobody can suspect what's goin on). Doesn't
anybody care to monitor that? Do you know anybody that home schools?
What are the restrictions, laws, and whatever else do they have to deal
with. Are they tested by the state periodically?

Chocolic

I have met people who home school. I've read articles about others. People
who genuinely homeschool make sure their kids get a variety of experiences
outside of home, or so it seems from what I've observed. Unlike the
dangerous nutters we read about atc. It is my understanding also that good,
true home-schooled children are required to meet standards just as public
school children must. I think the biggest problem we read about here on atc
are that folks who claim to homeschool, but who don't really do any
homeschooling whatsoever, are transcient - that is, they are hard to track.
Who goes looking for unenrolled children? If somebody moved into that vacant
farm house outside of town, who knows they have children? and they are not
being educated? Who sees them? Then - if somebody sees them - who checks
their school attendance? NOBODY, that's who. If caught, the perps (AKA
parents) proclaim they "homeschool." Rigggghhhhtttt.
